FAQ

Questions, answered

What exactly is a union authorization card?

It's a confidential statement that you want to be represented by ASTRA. When a strong majority of workers sign, we can ask the university to recognize our union voluntarily. Signing is the most helpful step you can take.

Is it confidential? Will my advisor or PI find out?

Yes, it's confidential. Cards are seen only by the worker-led organizing committee, never by the university, your department, or your advisor. We ask you to use a personal email so nothing routes through university systems.

Does signing cost anything? Do I have to pay dues now?

No. Signing a card costs nothing and does not obligate you to pay dues. Dues only ever come up after we've formed our union and democratically voted to ratify a contract, and members decide that together.

I'm an international worker on a visa. Is it safe for me to join?

Yes. Your legally protected right to organize does not depend on immigration status, and your card is confidential. In fact, a union contract is one of the strongest supports international workers can have, because it guarantees clear, fair procedures that don't depend on your immigration status. See the International students section.

What can a union actually change?

Almost anything about our working conditions: pay, healthcare, funding guarantees, workloads, time off, grievance and anti-harassment procedures, and protections for international workers. Instead of policies handed down to us, we negotiate a binding contract.

Isn't my stipend/funding already fixed by the university?

Current levels are set by university policy, which can change over time. A contract makes funding levels and protections written commitments we agree on together, so you can plan around them.

Who is eligible to join?

Graduate workers, including TAs, RAs, and Fellows. If you're unsure whether you're included, reach out, and we'll help you figure it out.

How can I do more than sign?

Join the organizing committee, talk to coworkers in your department, and help collect cards. Reach out my emailing us at info@astra-uaw.org
